ZZ Top: The Bearded Legends of Texas Rock
Few rock bands are as instantly recognizable—or as enduring—as ZZ Top. With their trademark beards, sunglasses, and gritty blend of blues, boogie, and hard rock, ZZ Top carved out a sound and image that made them icons of American music. Known for their infectious grooves, sharp wit, and killer guitar riffs, the trio became one of the most successful and beloved rock bands of all time.
Band History
ZZ Top formed in Houston, Texas in 1969, rising from the ashes of several local bands. The original lineup consisted of guitarist and vocalist Billy Gibbons, bassist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard—ironically, the only member without a beard. Their debut album, ZZ Top’s First Album, was released in 1971 and introduced fans to their signature Texas blues-rock sound.
Throughout the 1970s, ZZ Top steadily built a loyal fanbase with albums like Rio Grande Mud (1972), Tres Hombres (1973), and Fandango! (1975). Their breakout hit, “La Grange”, from Tres Hombres, showcased Gibbons’ gritty guitar work and Hill’s thumping basslines, all anchored by Beard’s tight drumming. The track, inspired by a notorious Texas brothel, remains one of the most iconic riffs in rock history.
In the 1980s, ZZ Top reinvented themselves for the MTV generation. With the release of Eliminator in 1983, the band fused their blues roots with synthesizers and modern production, creating a sound that was both retro and futuristic. The album spawned massive hits like “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs,” accompanied by slick, humorous music videos that became MTV staples. The album sold over 10 million copies and catapulted the band into global superstardom.
Band Members
The classic ZZ Top lineup remained unchanged for over 50 years:
- Billy Gibbons – Guitar, lead vocals: Known for his searing tone and smooth vocal style, Gibbons is one of rock’s most respected guitarists.
- Dusty Hill – Bass, vocals: With his booming voice and solid bass lines, Hill provided the perfect complement to Gibbons. He passed away in July 2021.
- Frank Beard – Drums: Despite being the only member without a beard, Beard kept the groove tight and steady since day one.
After Dusty Hill’s death, ZZ Top announced that longtime guitar tech Elwood Francis would take over on bass, per Hill’s wishes. The band has continued to perform and record, staying true to their roots.
Biggest Hits
ZZ Top’s catalog is filled with blues-rock classics, including:
