Tyla Laura Seethal, known mononymously as Tyla, is a South African singer and songwriter who has rapidly ascended to global stardom with her distinctive fusion of amapiano, pop, and R&B. Born on January 30, 2002, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Tyla grew up in a multicultural household with Indian, Zulu, Mauritian, and Irish heritage. Initially pursuing mining engineering in school, she eventually shifted her focus to music, drawing inspiration from artists like Michael Jackson, Rihanna, and Aaliyah.

Tyla’s musical journey began with her 2019 debut single, “Getting Late,” featuring Kooldrink, which garnered attention in South Africa and laid the groundwork for her international breakthrough. Her big break came in 2023 with the release of “Water,” a track that seamlessly blended amapiano rhythms with pop and R&B elements. The song’s viral success on platforms like TikTok propelled it onto the Billboard Hot 100, making Tyla the first South African soloist in 55 years to achieve this feat. “Water” earned her the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance and was certified multi-platinum in several countries, including the United States and South Africa.

Building on this momentum, Tyla released her self-titled debut album in 2024, which showcased her versatility and featured collaborations with artists like Tems, Gunna, and Becky G. The album received critical acclaim and debuted at number 24 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Other notable tracks from the album include “Been Thinking,” which blends R&B and amapiano influences, and “Jump,” a collaboration with Gunna and Skillibeng that combines Afrobeats, dancehall, and hip-hop elements.

Tyla’s achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including an MTV Video Music Award, two BET Awards, and three MTV Europe Music Awards. In 2025, she was honored as the Favorite Afrobeats Artist at the American Music Awards and was set to host the Kids’ Choice Awards. Despite facing challenges, such as postponing her North American tour due to an injury, Tyla remains committed to her craft and continues to inspire fans worldwide with her innovative sound and dedication to representing South African music on the global stage.
