Radiohead is an English rock band renowned for their experimental sound, introspective lyrics, and fearless approach to pushing the boundaries of modern music. Since their formation, the band has earned critical acclaim and a devoted global following, becoming one of the most influential acts of the past three decades.
Radiohead was formed in 1985 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England, by a group of school friends: Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards), Colin Greenwood (bass), Ed O’Brien (guitar, backing vocals), and Philip Selway (drums). Originally known as On a Friday, the band played local gigs before signing with EMI Records in the early 1990s, adopting the name Radiohead, inspired by a Talking Heads song.
The band’s debut album, Pablo Honey (1993), introduced them to the global music scene, propelled by the success of the single “Creep.” The song’s raw emotion and grunge-era angst struck a chord with audiences, becoming a massive hit worldwide. However, the band quickly distanced themselves from being labeled a one-hit wonder, determined to evolve beyond the alternative rock sound that initially defined them.
Their 1995 sophomore album, The Bends, marked a turning point, featuring a more sophisticated and textured sound. Tracks like “High and Dry,” “Fake Plastic Trees,” and “Street Spirit (Fade Out)” showcased Thom Yorke’s haunting vocals and the band’s growing ambition. The album received widespread critical praise and hinted at the innovative direction Radiohead would soon embrace.
In 1997, Radiohead released OK Computer, a landmark album often cited as one of the greatest in rock history. Known for its atmospheric production and themes of alienation and technological anxiety, the album included iconic songs like “Paranoid Android,” “Karma Police,” and “No Surprises.” OK Computer catapulted the band to global stardom and earned a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
Rather than rest on their success, Radiohead took an even more experimental turn with Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001), incorporating electronic music, jazz, and ambient influences. Despite initial mixed reactions, both albums are now regarded as groundbreaking works that reshaped the possibilities of rock music in the 21st century.
The band continued to evolve with albums like Hail to the Thief (2003), In Rainbows (2007) — famously released as a pay-what-you-want digital download — The King of Limbs (2011), and A Moon Shaped Pool (2016). Songs such as “There There,” “Nude,” “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” and “Burn the Witch” highlight their enduring ability to innovate while retaining their emotional core.
In addition to their music, the members of Radiohead have pursued solo projects and film scoring, with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood notably collaborating on movie soundtracks. Despite their individual endeavors, the band remains active and continues to influence artists across genres.
Radiohead’s legacy lies in their fearless creativity and refusal to conform, making them one of the most respected and adventurous bands of their era.
