Event Description (Available Tickets Below Video)

Gotye is the stage name of Belgian-Australian musician Wouter “Wally” De Backer, best known for his global hit “Somebody That I Used to Know.” Though often mistaken for a band, Gotye is actually a solo project, with De Backer writing, recording, and producing the music himself, while occasionally collaborating with other artists. His sound blends indie pop, electronic, and art rock influences, often featuring inventive sampling and layered, experimental production.

Wouter De Backer was born on May 21, 1980, in Bruges, Belgium. His family immigrated to Australia when he was a child, settling in Melbourne. From a young age, De Backer showed an interest in music, learning various instruments and developing a keen ear for diverse styles. In his teens, he formed a band called Downstares with friends before venturing into solo recording under the name Gotye, derived from the French equivalent of his given name, “Gauthier.”

Gotye’s early work involved self-produced albums and home recordings, which gained attention on the Australian independent music scene. His debut studio album, Boardface, was released in 2003, followed by Like Drawing Blood in 2006. The latter earned critical praise in Australia, with tracks like “Hearts a Mess” showcasing his flair for moody, layered compositions.

However, it was his third studio album, Making Mirrors (2011), that propelled Gotye to international fame. The album’s standout track, “Somebody That I Used to Know,” featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra, became a worldwide sensation. Known for its haunting melody, minimalist instrumentation, and emotionally raw lyrics about a failed relationship, the song resonated with audiences across the globe. It topped the charts in over 20 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, and its distinctive music video, featuring the artists painted to blend into a patterned backdrop, became iconic on platforms like YouTube.

“Somebody That I Used to Know” won numerous awards, including the 2013 Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Despite the massive success of the single and the Making Mirrors album — which also included tracks like “Eyes Wide Open” and “I Feel Better” — Gotye chose not to aggressively pursue mainstream fame.

In addition to his solo work, Wouter De Backer is a member of the Melbourne-based indie rock band The Basics, formed in 2002 alongside Kris Schroeder and Tim Heath. The band has released several albums and remains active, known for their energetic live performances and a style that mixes rock, pop, and folk influences.

After the whirlwind success of Making Mirrors, Gotye stepped back from releasing solo material and focused on other musical projects and archival work, including creating a record label for vintage recordings and contributing to various collaborations.

Though he remains a somewhat enigmatic figure in the mainstream music world, Gotye’s brief but powerful impact — particularly through “Somebody That I Used to Know” — left a lasting mark on pop and indie music culture.
