Event Description (Available Tickets Below Video)

Cyndi Lauper is a beloved American singer, songwriter, actress, and activist known for her vibrant personality, distinctive voice, and enduring influence on pop culture. Born Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper on June 22, 1953, in Queens, New York, she grew up in a working-class family and began writing songs and playing guitar at a young age. Inspired by artists like The Beatles, David Bowie, and Janis Joplin, Lauper developed a unique style that would later define her career.

Lauper’s rise to fame began in the early 1980s when she fronted the band Blue Angel. Though the group released a self-titled album in 1980, it failed to gain commercial success and eventually disbanded. Determined to pursue a solo career, Lauper signed with Portrait Records and released her debut solo album, She’s So Unusual, in 1983. The album was an instant hit, becoming one of the defining records of the decade.

She’s So Unusual produced several iconic singles, including “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and “All Through the Night.” “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” became an international anthem of female empowerment, while “Time After Time” showcased Lauper’s ability to deliver heartfelt ballads. The album earned Lauper critical acclaim and commercial success, making her the first female artist to have four top-five singles from a debut album on the Billboard Hot 100.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Lauper continued to release hit records and diversify her sound. Her second album, True Colors (1986), featured the title track “True Colors,” which became another signature hit, celebrated for its message of acceptance and individuality. The album also included tracks like “Change of Heart” and “What’s Going On,” a cover of Marvin Gaye’s classic.

Beyond music, Lauper has enjoyed a successful acting career, appearing in films like Vibes (1988) and Life with Mikey (1993), as well as guest roles on television. In 2013, she made history by winning a Tony Award for Best Original Score for the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, making her the first woman to win the category solo.

On a personal level, Lauper is known for her activism and outspoken support for LGBTQ+ rights, equality, and social causes. She co-founded the True Colors United organization, which works to end homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth.

Cyndi Lauper married actor David Thornton in 1991, and the couple has one son, Declyn Wallace Thornton Lauper, born in 1997. Despite personal and professional ups and downs, Lauper has remained a vibrant and relevant figure in pop culture for over four decades.

Today, Cyndi Lauper is celebrated not only for her unforgettable music and eccentric style but also for her fearless individuality and lasting contributions to music, theater, and activism. Her legacy as a trailblazer continues to inspire new generations of artists and fans around the world.
